About Dewalt Law Office

Attorney: Deborah N. Dewalt Deborah

Dewalt Law Office primarily handles family law cases such as divorce, custody, child support, paternity and the other areas of practice, which you can learn more about in the other sections of this website. I take cases throughout the Twin Cities and the South of the River areas, including Hennepin, Ramsey, Dakota, Scott, Carver, Wright, Rice, Goodhue and Olmstead counties.

I am a Fellow in the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. I have also been selected for inclusion in Minnesota Super Lawyers every year since 2000 and have been recognized twice in the list of Top 40 Family Law Super Lawyers.

One of the things that I like about practicing family law is the wide variety of topics that come up in families ranging from the dynamics of domestic abuse to business valuation issues. Sometimes, apparently simple cases have complexity. Sometimes what appears to be a complex case resolves efficiently and on a straightforward basis. As your attorney, I am always listening and analyzing, looking for the facts, law and case dynamics that will further the goals you have set for the case.

My early experience as an attorney included many different topics and prepared me for quickly learning about new topics. I went to law school at the University of Minnesota. After I graduated from law school in 1983, I was a clerk for a federal district court judge in North Dakota. The cases I was assigned as a clerk involved violent and white collar crime, Native American tribal jurisdiction vs. federal and state jurisdiction, oil royalties, personal injury disputes, condemnation valuations, Social Security Disability issues, class actions relating to the rights of developmentally disabled individuals and farm lending issues.

Since then, my case load has included issues of CHIPS defense, civil commitment defense, collection actions, life insurance beneficiary disputes, probate, guardianships, workers' compensation, unemployment compensation, appeals, bankruptcy, contract law, real estate, domestic abuse and the like. Some of this experience resulted from cases solely involving those issues. Some of it has arisen during the course of representing family law clients, beginning in 1985.

I strongly believe that education for clients is a fundamental aspect of being an effective family lawyer. Explaining and answering questions are components of any representation in any case in my office. In addition, for many years, I published Family Law Ripples as educational outreach on family law issues. You can see this publication in the Newsletter Archive section of this website.

Support Staff and Office Sharon

When you call my office or come for an interview, the first person you will meet is my secretary. You will have your primary communications with me, not a subordinate. However, many times my secretary can help with routine questions about our office and will also help you access me by setting appointments or taking down your questions so that I can get back to you.

Our office policy is to attempt to respond to emails and telephone calls promptly. I cannot always meet this goal when I have hearings or other meetings outside of the office. In that situation, I often have my secretary respond to you so that you know there will be a delay or that I might be calling outside of regular business hours.

My office is at a suburban location with a parking lot. We make an effort to maintain a comfortable and welcoming physical setting. Clients sometimes stop by to drop things off or see if I am available for a short meeting without an appointment. Our regular office hours are Monday from 1 to 5 p.m., Tuesdays through Fridays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Occasionally, we close early the day before a holiday.
